GRAND CANYON

At one point, the majestic area that is the Grand Canyon was all submerged underwater. According to legend a big ice comet landed in the Colorado River and after millions of years, the comet melted, and water rushed through the rocks, carving the Grand Canyon. In the Hualapai tribe their legends state a giant eagle soared the skies before the flooding started and swooped down to save the Hualapai people. This grand eagle flew the Hualapai on his back, leaving the tribespeople along the ledge of the west rim when the flooding stopped. The eagle itself turned into stone, where it remains to this day.

HUALAPAI POINT

The Hualapai (pronounced “Wal-lah-pie”) are a Native American tribe originally from northwestern Arizona. Their name means “People of the Tall Pines” in their native language. Historically, the Hualapai inhabited a vast area stretching from the Grand Canyon to the western edges of the Mojave Desert, and their traditional territory covered around seven million acres. They are known for their deep connection to the land, which includes the Colorado River and the surrounding high desert plateaus.

The Hualapai people traditionally lived a semi-nomadic lifestyle, relying on hunting, gathering, and some farming to sustain themselves. They hunted deer, rabbits, and other game, and gathered wild plants like yucca, mesquite, and agave. Seasonal migration was part of their way of life, moving to higher elevations during the summer and returning to the warmer lowlands in winter.

Today, most Hualapai live on the Hualapai Indian Reservation, which was established in 1883 and covers nearly one million acres. The reservation is located along the western rim of the Grand Canyon and is famous for attractions like the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass bridge that extends over the canyon, providing stunning views and bringing tourism to the area.

The Hualapai continue to preserve their cultural heritage through traditional ceremonies, language revitalization efforts, and community programs. They also strive to maintain a sustainable balance between modern development and their cultural and environmental values.
